This work was undertaken in order to examine M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities during meiotic progression of cat oocytes cultured in two different media for two different incubation times and preovulatory cat oocytes that reached MII in vivo. Oocytes recovered from ovaries of ovariectomized cats were cultured either in TCM 199 or SOF for 24 h and 40 h. In vivo matured oocytes were recovered by follicular aspiration from ovaries of domestic cats ovariectomized 24 h to 26 h after hormonal treatment. Results showed that the kinetic of MPF and MAPK activity was similar during meiotic progression of cat oocytes matured in TCM 199 and SOF. After 24 h of incubation, MII oocytes had significantly (p < 0.001) higher MPF and MAPK levels than MII oocytes cultured for 40 h in both culture media. MPF and MAPK activity was significantly (p < 0.01) lower in the oocytes matured in vitro than in those matured in vivo. This study provides evidence that the two different maturation media did not determine differences in MPF and MAPK fluctuations and levels during meiotic progression of cat oocytes and that the time of maturation influenced the level of the two kinases. Moreover, it shows that MPF and MPK activity is higher in in vivo matured oocytes than in in vitro matured oocytes, suggesting a possible incomplete cytoplasmic maturation after culture

Reduction of burden of hemolyzed specimens in a large urban emergency department: A real-world, five years’ experience

In vitro hemolysis may jeopardize patient care because tests results generated using unsuitable specimens may lead to inappropriate patient management. The prevalence of hemolyzed specimens is high in the emergency department (ED). We previously showed that collecting blood by means of a closed system entailing manual aspiration of blood instead of using conventional evacuated systems was effective to cut-down by nearly half the rate of hemolysis. Aim of this real world study was to verify whether longterm replacement of standard evacuated blood collection systems may be really effective to reduce the burden of spurious hemolysis. Starting from May 2014 in the ED of our Hospital vacuum tubes were replaced with S-Monovette serum tubes. We compared data about hemolyzed specimens entered in the two years before the implementation of the new device (i.e., 2012 and 2013) and the two years after introducing SMonovette in manual aspiration mode (i.e. 2015 and 2016). The year 2014 was not considered due to mixed data. The rate of hemolyzed specimens decreased from 4.36% to 3.07% with the use of S-Monovette in manual aspiration mode (Chi squared, 183.8; P<0.001). The likelihood of obtaining hemolyzed specimens was hence reduced by approximately 30% (relative risk, 0.707), with an expected economic saving of approximately 510€/year. The results of this real-world study demonstrate that the use of an alternative closed device encompassing manual aspiration for drawing blood from intravenous catheters may reduce hemolyzed samples by approximately 30%, so representing a valuable perspective for safeguarding patient safety and improving ED efficiency

Graphic arts in the National Book Exhibition of 1928: Materiality, art and industry in book production in Argentina

In September 1928 was held in Buenos Aires the First National Book Exhibition, an event that agglutinated much of the discussions around the advancement of the publishing industry in the 1920’s, while representing a significant milestone for the consolidation of graphic arts in Argentina. In the first decades of the XXth century, diverse institutional initiatives gradually shaped a tradition of engraving as a “book art”, allied to literary illustration. e Exhibition collaborated to a large extent with this process: it assigned a space for an engraving and luxury editions exhibition, and it counted with the attendance of a special commission of illustrators, formed by Adolfo Bellocq and Alfredo Guido, among others, who worked intensely as promoters of engraving trade from both artistic and pedagogical practice. Furthermore, the strategy that was used to promote the event had a certain tradition in graphic arts: the artistic poster contest. We propose to analyze this exhibition in its aspects related to the circulation of images and ideas around the book like an object as its own right and, particularly, the early tensions related to graphic arts within the Argentine publishing industry.Fil: Bonelli Zapata, Ana Laura. Sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol for hydrogen production

Get PDF
In last years, sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol (SESRE) has become an interesting alternative for the industry, since it offers high H2 purity with a simpler and smaller system. In this study CaO derived materials were synthesized to improve multicyclic CO2 sorption-desorption stability. A dispersant and inert phase (Ca12All4O33) was incorporated into CaO structure. The effects of CaO:Ca12Al14O33 ratio on the characteristics of the new absorbents and on their performance in sorption-enhanced steam reforming of ethanol were analyzed. The results obtained indicate that the absorbent 85% CaO – 15% Ca12Al14O33 had significantly improved cyclic reaction stability. Additionally, it was proved that with this adsorbent CO purity on wet basis was lower than 2 %, making it possible to attain in only one reaction stage the CO purity obtained after de WGS reactor.Fil: Avendaño Cañizalez, Roger Orlando. The use of S-Monovette is effective to reduce the burden of hemolysis in a large urban emergency department

Get PDF
Background: Due to the high prevalence of hemolysis in specimens received from the emergency department (ED), several strategies have been proposed to improve sample quality, but none of these seem effective to overcome the problem. In a preliminary study we showed that the use of S-Monovette blood collection system was effective to lower the risk of hemolysis in venous blood samples collected from intravenous catheters. This study was hence aimed to verify whether the replacement of a conventional vacuum system with S-Monovette may be effective to reduce the burden of hemolysis in the daily practice of a large urban ED. Materials and methods: The study was divided in two observational periods of 4 months each. In the former period, blood was collected from intravenous catheters using BD Vacutainer SST II Plus plastic serum tubes, whereas in the latter period the blood was drawn from intravenous catheters using S-Monovette blood tubes in aspiration mode. Sample hemolysis was automatically assessed in all serum samples by photometrical measurement. Results: The total number of hemolysed serum specimens was 624/14155 (4.41%) in the first phase of the study, and 342/13319 (2.57%) in the second phase of the study (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Results of our study confirm that the introduction of the Sarstedt S-Monovette blood tubes has reduced the hemolysis rate in the emergency department compared to the previously used BD Vacutainer® SST II Plus plastic serum tube

Civility and Trust in Social Media

Abstract Social media have been credited with the potential of reinvigorating trust by offering new opportunities for social and political participation. This view has been recently challenged by the rising phenomenon of online incivility, which has made the environment of social networking sites hostile to many users. We conduct a novel experiment in a Facebook setting to study how the effect of social media on trust varies depending on the civility or incivility of online interaction. We find that participants exposed to civil Facebook interaction are significantly more trusting. In contrast, when the use of Facebook is accompanied by the experience of online incivility, no significant changes occur in users' behavior. These results are robust to alternative configurations of the treatments
